Effects Of Beta Glucans

Scientific research of beta glucan started in 20th century, in mid 60-ties. Positive effect on immune system was observed from the very beginning of the research. However, there was an important information missing: how does the beta glucan interacts with immune cells, the exact mechanism of action was unknown.

The analysis of interaction human cells with beta glucan clearly demonstrated, that complement receptor 3 (CR3, CD11b/CD18) is primarily responsible for binding of beta glucan as well as his biological effects.

CR3 is considered to be the most important receptor for removing of opsonised iCRb complexes through fagocytosis. Apart from the fact, that CR3 is receptor for fagocytosis and cytotoxicity, it also acts as adhesive molecule responsible for diapedesis (diapedesis – movement of leukocytes out of the circulatory system towards the site of tissue damage or infection).

Activation of CR3 by beta glucan is initiated by binding of beta glucan to lectin site of CR3 molecule (lectins – sugar-binding proteins , play a role in biological recognition phenomena involving cells and proteins, for example, some viruses use lectins to attach themselves to the cells of the host organism during infection). After binding, CR3 is ready for cytotoxic degranulation.

From many researches and studies following effect of beta glucan are known:

  • immune system support, protection against viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic illnesses, help during their treatment
  • protects against psychical and physical stress after-effects
  • anti-cancer effect, significant support of immune system in various forms of therapy of cancer diseases
  • help to selectively reduce the LDL cholesterol and triglycerides in blood
  • radioprotection – protects from negative effects of radiation (UV,X-Ray, cosmic etc.)
  • antioxidative effects – scavenges free radicals
  • helps with healing of skin burns, wounds and ulcers
