What is Vitamin K2?
In 1929, the Danish Nutritional scientist Dr. Henrik Dam discovered that feeding chicks a totally fat-free diet caused uncontrolled bleeding under their skin. Dr. Dam quickly discovered the reason for this disturbing effect: the diet was missing a previously unknown fat-soluble nutrient, which he appropriately named “koagulationsvitamin” – literally, the “clotting vitamin”. The English name for the new vitamin was taken from Dr. Dam’s Danish: “K”, for “Koagulation”.
Vitamin K and Osteoporosis
There are several studies relating high prevalence of disease and drug specific osteopenia and osteoporosis relating to vitamin K status. Schoon et al , in a 32 patient Crohn’s disease study, conclude ucOC inversely associated with bone mineral density. Tamatani et al4 concluded that vitamin K1 and MK-7 were significantly, positively correlated with bone mineral density. Kanai et al observed low BMD in women with lower serum vitamin K1 and K2.
“The Calcium Paradox”
Both men and women are losing calcium when they become older. From the age of 35 we are losing bone mass and height as the illustrations shows below. Especially when women enter menopause, they simultaneously lose calcium from bone and increase its deposition in arteries – a negative “double whammy” called the “calcium paradox,” which greatly increases the risk of both osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease. The drop in oestrogen causes both problems, but vitamin K can help rectify them.

In 2000 Roseneck looked at the survival as a function of cardiovascular calcification. Patients with cardiovascular disease were divided in those with low or high vascular calcium. Survival after 4 years in the low calcium group was 80%, in the moderate or severe calcium group less than 20%.
